UGC is the University Grants Commission. It was established in 1954, under an act of the parliament. The main purpose of the UGC is to set standards for university education in India. UGC regulates teaching standards, exams, and research in colleges and universities.
The main roles of the UGC are to
1) Set and maintain- teaching, exam, and research standards.
2) Create regulations on education standards.
3) Monitor college and university education.
4) Distribute grants to universities and colleges.
5) Act as a link between governments and educational institutions.
6) Advise governments on improving university education.
HEI stands for Higher Education Institution. HEIs include colleges, universities, and other post-secondary educational institutions that provide higher education in India. HEIs are assessed and accredited by bodies such as NAAC, which evaluates them based on various criteria, such as curriculum, teaching, learning, research, infrastructure, etc.
NAAC is the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. It is an autonomous organisation of the University Grants Commission, established in 1994 and with headquarters in Bengaluru. NAAC’s mandate is to ensure the quality of courses and facilities in Higher Educational institutions (HEIs).
NAAC is an entity of the UGC that does quality checks on educational institutions. NACC calls it A&A , which is Assessment and Accreditation.
The minimum requirement for Institutions to be eligible for NAAC A&A are
1) Recognition by MHRD or UGC
2) Operational for six years, or
3) Two batches of students have graduated ( whichever is earlier of 2 and 3 ).
The NAAC rating helps you understand an institution’s quality and performance. The higher the NAAC rating, the better the facilities available to you.
An institution’s NAAC rating is valid for five years.
The UGC has specific rules and regulations for HEIs offering ODL programs. These include requirements for infrastructure, faculty, curriculum, quality assurance, etc.
HEIs need to be recognized or” entitled” by the UGC to offer ODL programs. This recognition is based on the HEI’s capabilities and adherence to UGC norms.
DEB is the Distance Education Bureau of the UGC. It regulates and oversees ODL programs offered by HEIs in India.
ODL stands for Open and Distance Learning.
These are courses offered via online and distance education modes.
A higher NAAC rating shows better performance by the institution.
NAAC A institutions have a CGPA range of 3.01-3.25.1
NAAC A+ institutions have a CGPA range of 3.26-3.50.1
NAAC A++ institutions have a CGPA range of 3.51 to 4.00
A NAAC rating for an HEI is valid for five years.
NIRF stands for National Institutional Ranking Framework.
It is developed by the MoE, MHRD, Government of India. It uses quantitative methods to grade institutions. Institutions are ranked based on various criteria. Some of them are
1) facilities available to students,
2) research facilities,
3) capital expenditure,
4) job placement,
5) salaries offered to placed students,
6) graduation outcomes,
7) outreach,
8) perception of students, hiring companies etc.
As a student, you can make informed decisions about the quality and performance of an institution. The higher the NIRF ranking, the better will be the facilities available to you. The NIRF ranking for an institution is valid for one year.
